Black Backed Jackal
Afrikaans name : Rooijakkals
Scientific name : Canis mesomelas
Region : South Western dry areas of Southern Africa.
Habitat : Woodland, (acacia and commiphora) as well as open habitats.
Description : red-brown with black and white saddle back, black tail
tip and white under belly and throat.
Weight : max. 14 kg
Height : max 47 cm
Food : From rodents to small antelope and scavenging from kills of
other predators.
Habits : Mostly nocturnal and twilight activity. Pair bonds for life.
Young : Mother has up to 6 pups in dry season. Gestation period 2
months. Maturity at1/2 years.
Predators : Leopards and eagles (pups)
