Region
: Once ubiquitous throughout Sub Saharan Africa, eland now live primarily
on ranches and in game reserves.
Description : the most massive of all true antelope. The common eland of
central and southern Africa has a fawn-colored coat; it develops a broad,
deep-fringed pendulous dewlap. 10 to 16 white body stripes, with white
markings to limbs. A shy animal that runs at the slightest disturbance.
Perhaps
because they have always been hunted in Africa, especially by the San tribe, who
worshipped them, eating them as Catholics do communion.
Habitat : Arid Areas, miombo woodland, grasslands and mountain regions.
Migratory.
Weight : max. 950 kg.
Height
: over 1.8 m
Horns : spiral straight upward and can grow
to about 1.2 m. The derby eland of southern Africa has longer
horns than the common eland.
Food : browser / grazer, eats grasses, foliage, bulbs, seeds, herbs,
fruits and tubers.
Horns are important for feeding, to collect
twigs they grasp them between the stalks, breaking them loose with a shake of their head
and powerful neck.
Habits : Feeds during day and at night. Can jump heights of over 2
meters. Herds of from 12 to up to 500. Eland are gregarious animals but old bulls tend to be solitary.
Range size from 145 up to 450 square km.
Speed : max 40 km/h
Young : Mating during rainy season, births peak at end of dry season.
Maturity on 4/5 years. Gestation period 8/9 months.
Predators : Hyena, Lion.
Bulls show little fear of preditors and single mothers will confront even lions.
Lifespan : Eland can live for more than 20 years.
