: Botswana, Namibia, South Africa. Haartebeest were once the widest ranging
of all antelope across Africa.
Description
: Hartebeest,
common name for a large, high shouldered species of African antelope, with an
elongated forehead and a brownish-red coat with dark markings on its face and a white
rump patch and underbelly .
Habitat : Herds feed on grass on the edge of the open
plains or dry desert regions of sub-Saharan Africa.
Weight : max. 140 kg.
Height : max. 117 cm
Horns : two curved, ringed horns,
present in both sexes, do not grow directly out of the sides of the head
but arise from a short central horn.
Food : Pure selective grazers, they feed on medium height grasslands
and are capable of going without water for many weeks at a time.
 Habits
: Hartebeests
are keen-sighted, fleet-footed animals. They are active during the day and
at night, travelling in small herds of females and single males. Other males
congregate in bachelor herds. Herds are sociable and intermingle. No lasting
relationships between individuals.
Young : Tan colour. Calving annually at end of dry season . Maturity at 2
years. Gestation period 8 months. Calves accompany mothers after two
weeks.
Predators : Leopards, Hyena,
Lion, and Jackal.
