Region
: Striped Hyenas are native to Africa North and East of the Sahara. Spotted
and brown Hyenas are found South of the Sahara.
Description : Main types
include spotted hyenas, (Crocuta crocuta), brown hyena, (H. brunnea) and striped
hyena, (Hyaena hyaena). The aardwolf (proteles cristatus), is also a member of
this family. They are dog-like Carnivores with powerful builds and enormously
strong neck and jaw muscles.
Habitat
: Brown Hyena - Arid and west coast zones / Striped Hyena - arid scrubby
areas / Spotted Hyena - Abundant on the grassy plains.
Weight : max. 63 kg. (spotted hyenas)
Height : max. 85 cm (spotted hyenas)
Food : Strong digestive system, they can eat every part of their
prey, including hides, bones, hooves, teeth and horns, which they digest
within 24 hours. They are not always the scavengers that they are sometimes
believed to be. Brown Hyena - fish, fruit, meat / Striped Hyena - fish, fruit,
meat, insect, rodents.
Habits : Monogamous, social and territorial. They move in clans of up
to 100.
Young : Adult females share parental responsibilities toward young.
Maturity at 15/18 months. Gestation period 3/4 months.
Predators : Lion often take hyena kills, and to a
lesser extent, so can wild dog packs. Jackals
often steal from Hyenas too. Hyenas steal from cheetah
and leopards and use vultures to guide them to their
prey.
