Lion
Afrikaans name : Leeu
Scientific name : (Panthera leo)
Region : sub-Saharan regions of
Africa.
Description : King of Beasts.
Habitat
: African
lions live on the plains and in open wooded areas.
Weight : max. up to 260 kg.
Height : 120 cm
Food : The lion is an ambush rather than a chase
killer. With its heavy body it can only reach speeds of
about (35 miles) an hour, often much slower than the
animals it pursues, (not as efficient at hunting as leopard or
wild dog)
Habits
: They are the only cats moving in family groups and
normally occupy a well defined territory. African lions are the most
social of all big cats and live together in prides, ( three to twelve related adult females, their offspring, and one
to six adult males). The care of the cubs is shared throughout the pride
. New male leaders may kill and eat the cubs of other males.
Young : Maturity at 4 years. Gestation period 3.5 months.
Predators : Eighty percent of the cubs will not survive to
maturity. Lions kill and eat other predators,
Leopards, Cheetah,
Caracal and Jackal
but rarely Hyena.
Longevity : Lions live up to about
18 years in the wild, (among the longest living of the big cats).
