Description : A
swift African antelope with a silky coat, large ears, and a short,
bushy tail. Coat is yellowish to
reddish brown with white under-parts.
Habitat : They like to graze
on open plains and lakesides
Weight : max. 14 kg.
Height : 50-66 cm at the shoulder
Horns :
The male has
slim, spike-like horns.
Food : Grazer of green grass and browser of herbs and foliage in the
dry seasons.
Habits : Mostly night feeding.
Young : Calving season peaks during rains. Maturity on 4/5 months.
Gestation period 6/7 months.
Predators : Leopards, Hyena,
Cheetah and Wild dogs. Eagles and snakes are a danger
to young. They display a characteristic stotting (pronking) action when
alarmed, jumping into the air with all four legs held stiff and straight. Some experts
believe this may be done to give them a better view of approaching predators but it is
more likely they are trying to entice the predator to chase and so divert attention from
the herd.
