Description :
Gemsbok is the common name for the largest and best known of the three species of oryx, or straight-horned antelope. They have a mane and a tufted tail and have dark patches on the face and forehead, a dark streak on either side of the eye, and dark markings (varying with the species) on the body and legs. The coat is grayish brown.
Habitat :
The species inhabits the grasslands of southwestern Africa, able to thrive in waterless landscapes.
Weight
: up to 210 kg.
Height : up to 140 cm high at the shoulder. 
Horns : long, straight, sharp-tipped horns, present in both sexes,  which extend up to about 1.5 m 
Food :
A grazer / browser, Gemsbok, eat tough dry grasses and foliage and can survive dry seasons by eating melons and plant bulbs. 
Habits :
Day and night activity. Herds of 100 and more have been seen, although 10 to 14 is more common.
Young :  Gestation period 8.5 months. Maturity at 2 years, (f), and at 5 years, (m).
Predators : Leopards, Hyena, Lion. The horns are lowered parallel to the ground and the animals lunge with great accuracy when holding off lions and other predators. They are also swift runners that can outpace a pack of African hunting dogs.
