Description : Related to the sable antelope (Hippotragus
niger) and to the extinct blaauwbok, or bluebuck (H.
leucophoeus),
the roan antelope is a large, graceful animal with long,
pointed ears, an erect mane, and long hair on
the throat. The coat is reddish grey to reddish brown, with black and
white face markings and a white muzzle and white underbelly.
Habitat : favours open areas with taller, ranker perennial
grasses and is more or less sedentary within a small area, staying near wetland, light woodland and open
plains.
Weight : max. 280 kg.
Height : standing
130-150 cm at the shoulder.
Horns : Both sexes have long, sickle-shaped horns, rising upwards and backwards in a small arch.
Horns can reach nearly 1 meter in length.
Food : Roan are water dependant grazer/browser antelope that thrive
on tufted perrenial grasses that grow in less fertile soil.20% of their diet
consists of herbs and foliage.
Habits : They
move in herds of 6-20 but bulls may be solitary
Young : Year round Calving season. Weaned at 6 months. Gestation period
9.5 months. Females reach maturity at two years.
Predators : Leopards, Hyena,
Lion, and wild dogs. They live in regions of low predator
intensity.
