Rock Hyrax / Dassie
Afrikaans name : Klip Dassie
Scientific name : Procavia johnstoni (Rock dassie) and Heterohyrax
brucei (Bush / yellow spotted dassie).
Region : Pan Africa. anywhere that they can hide, in rocky
environments all over Africa, from rock deserts to forests and grasslands. Not
found in the lowland rain forests.
Description : Large rodent with brownish-yellow fur and lighter
underbelly.
Habitat : Rocky terrain with good outlook and many small niches to provide
cover from predators.
Weight : max. 6 kg. (Rock dassie / male) 2.4 kg (bush dassie / male)
Height : max. 60 cm (Rock dassie / male) 50 cm (bush dassie / male)
Food : Rock dassie has high crowned teeth well adapted to its grazing
habits. Bush dassie is a browser and survives on nutrition derived from trees
and foliage. These two types of hyrax therefore survive comfortably in each
others spaces as they do not threaten each others food supply.
Habits : Average srange of rock dassie harem is 5 square kilometers
and that of the bush dassie is about three square kilometers. Rock dassies and
Bush dassies terrirories overlap and they co-exist amicably, largely due to
their seperate feeding habits and capabilities. Species develop snug relations
with each other, even huddling together for warmth in cold weather.
Young : Annual breeding seasons peak in the rainy seasons. 1/3 young per
litter. Maturity on 2.5 years.
Predators : Eagles, Snakes, Leopards, Caracal,
Jackal.
Longevity : 10 - 15 years.
