Scientific name : Tragelaphus spekii
Region : Western and Southern Africa.
Description : A beautiful reddish brown animal with
twisted backward pointing horns, faint white strips on the back and white spots on the
flanks and cheeks.
Habitat : Water lovers. Swamps and stable marshes. Found deep within the
reeds.
Weight : max. 125 kg.
Height
: max. 125 cm at the shoulders.
Horns : Up to 90 cm. long with two twisting turns.
Food : Browser/grazer that likes eating plants still in their
flowering stages. Swims in the water to eat lush swamp vegetation. Grazes green
grass and woody vegetation when out of the water.
Habits : Great swimmer. Shy. Mostly solitary, maybe with 1 or 2
females. Often only come out to eat under the cover of darkness. A true aquatic antelope found only in swamp
grasses having specially adapted long pointy hooves to support them on marshy soil.
Young : Gestation period 7.5 months. Calving mostly in the dry season.
Weaning at 6/7 months. Females can calve at one year. Maturity for males
begins at 5 years. Calves accompany mothers.
Predators : Leopards, Hyena,
Lion, Caracal, Jackal.
