is native to the open, treeless plains of southern Africa.
Description : closest to the thompson's gazelle. A graceful striking
antelope characterized by
a fold of skin that runs from midback to rump that can be opened in times of
excitement to display a crest of white hair. Its coat is reddish brown with a
broad and horizontal dark brown band on each side and with a white underbelly, head,
tail, and rump. It is the national and sporting emblem of South Africa.
Habitat : The springbuck is the most abundant antelope in Western Southern
africa.
Weight : max.40 kg.
Speed : max 88 km/p/h.

Horns : Both sexes have ringed, lyre-shaped horns, up to 50 cm
long in adult males.
Food : A browser/grazer that is able to exist without drinking.
Habits : Day and night feeder. When alarmed or
excited, the springbok characteristically makes a series of stiff-legged,
vertical leaps up to 3.5 m high. This action, known as 'stotting'
or 'pronking', is
performed with the head down, the hooves bunched, and the back arched.
Young : Calving season peaks in spring. Maturity on 2 years. Gestation
period 6/7 months.
Predators : Leopards, Hyena,
Lion, wild dog and Jackal.
