Afrikaans name : Steenbok
Scientific name : Raphicerus campestris
Region : Throughout Southern Africa.
Description : Related to the grysbok. Steenbuck are small graceful antelope with
slim, long legs and a lush grey to reddish coloured coat.
Habitat : Open, light woodland,
dry woody Savanna. Scattered cover between open grasslands.
Weight : max. 11kg
Height : 50 cm
Horns : short straight upward
pointing horns, ringed at their bases, up to 20 cm long.
Food : browses and
grazes. Water independent. Eats woody plants, forbs, roots and tubers,
seeds and seedpods, young grasses and berries and fruits.
Habits : Day and night activity. Monogamous. Solitary.
Young : Wooly coated young. Calving season peak in early rains, when
young mothers are 1 year old. Maturity on 2 years. Gestation period 6 months.
Calves can walk 5 minutes after birth. Weaned at 3 months.
Predators : Leopards, Hyena,
Lion, Caracal, Jackal,
wild dog and eagles. They often elude their predators by darting down old burrows.
