Region : Southern Savanna
Description : Like the haartebeest, but without the elongated head, they have a smooth reddish brown coat with a light fawn belly and a
tasseled tail.
Habitat :
They graze on open plains.
Weight : max.130 kg.
Height :115 cm. at the shoulder.
Horns : Strong, rigid and simple crescent shaped horns up to 60
cm. long.
Food : selective grazer, preferring greener tender growth along the
wet floodplains, (where vast herds can occur) to riverbanks and swamplands.
Habits : Active during the day and at night. Migratory herds move
great distances in dry seasons in search of water.
Young : Gestation period 8 months. Calving end of the dry season. Calves
do not accompany mothers for the first three weeks. weaning at 6 months. Male
Maturity at 3 years, females at 1/1.5 years.
Predators : Leopards, Hyena,
Lion, Cheetah, Jackal.
The fastest of the
antelope, tsessebe are often harder to catch than other, larger,
antelope.
