Vaal or Gray Rhebuck

Region : The vaal rhebuck is a medium
sized antelope and the sole member of the Peleini tribe, found exclusively
in South Africa.
Description : Open country antelope
the rhebuck have long necks, bulbous noses and long, narrow ears and short fur in many shades of
gray.
Habitat : sourveld grassland and scrub savanna areas above
1000m. In the strandveld in the South Western regions, they are found almost at sea level
among the sand dunes.
Weight : max. 30kg
Height : Adult males - 80cm at shoulder.
Horns : straight spike like horns up to 25cm long.
Food : Rheebuck are daylight browsers. Feeding is mixed, they browse on
the higher slopes in the rainy season and descend to the lower grasslands in the
dry season.They also browse on herbs leaves and green shoots and are water
independent, being able to get sufficient water through browsing.
Habits : Vaal Rhebuck has an acute sense of sight with a well developed sense of
smell and sharp hearing. They are gregarious,
territorial antelope who live in closed family groups or harems. Herds consist
of up to 15 females and their young and a single male. Male offspring leave to
the periphery of the herd after about one year.
Young : Calving season Sept to Jan. Maturity on 2 years. Gestation
period 9 months. Weaning 6/8 months .
Predators : Caracal, Jackal,
Baboons, eagles and wild dogs.
