Region
: Western and Southern Africa - adapts easily
to many environments and is widely distributed.
Description :
A medium-sized monkey with black face, ears, hands, feet and tip of the tail
and a greenish-olive or silvery-gray coat. Its arms
and legs are approximately the same length.
Habitat : Woodland, savanna and high busha and mountain areas up to about
4000m. They do not inhabit rain forests or deserts.
Weight : max. 9 kg.
Height : max. 50 cm.
Food :Omnivorous. Leaves and young shoots are most important in the diet, but bark, flowers,
fruit, bulbs, roots and grass seeds are also consumed. The mainly vegetarian
diet is supplemented with insects, grubs, eggs, baby birds and sometimes rodents
and hares. Vervets rarely drink water.
Habits : Vervet monkeys live in troops of 10 to 50 individuals.
They are diurnal, sleeping and eating
in trees from which they seldom venture. The sounds that they make have
great scientific interest, for each sound is thought to correspond to a specific
object or event in the external world-a property usually reserved for human
speech
Young :
. The newborn has black hair and a pink face. Weaning after 1 year. Maturity on 3
years. Gestation period 5/6 months.
Predators : Leopards, Caracal, Jackal,
Servals, Baboons, Crocodiles, Pythons and Eagles.
Life span: 24 years.
