Region
: (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) are
found in and East of the Rift Valley,
(Kobus defassa) are found in and
West of the Rift Valley, with both forms overlapping in areas.
Description
: Waterbuck
are one of the heaviest and most water dependant of the antelope, with long
bodies and necks and short, stocky legs. They have a coarse, shaggy coat with a
rough furry neck mane . The coat is usually red-brown to gray
and darkens with age. Lower legs are black with white rings above the hooves
and white noses, ear-linings, eyebrows, throat area, inner thighs and underparts.
(Kobus ellipsiprymnus) are distinguished by the white ring on their rump whereas
(Kobus defassa)
have a solid white patch on the rump.
Habitat : They need a combination of open grassland for grazing,
thicket for cover and lots of water and are therefore limited in distribution to
river valleys. They prefer higher and drier ground but will take to the water to
escape predators and to feed.
Weight : max. up to 236 kg
Height : 130cm.
Horns : Massive, 75cm long, ringed, U shaped, forward
curved horns.
Food : They are grazers who feed on a wide selection of medium to short grasses, needing a diet rich in
protein. In the dry season the waterbuck will browse acacia leaves for extra
protein supplement.
Habits :
Waterbuck move in fairly big herds near water and on aquatic grassland but always close to woodland
or thicket. Male
waterbuck engage in fierce competition for herds. Old
bucks remain alone and do not form solitary herds.
Young : Calving peaks during rainy season. Weaning at 7 months. Gestation
period 8.5 months.
Predators : Chiefly, Leopards, Hyena,
Lion, and wild dogs. Adult males have been
known to confront lions rather than to flee when endangered. Young calves have a
tendency to wander alone and are vulnerable to attack by hyenas.
